Turfing & Aftercare FAQs
Laying turf for the first time?
Our Turfing & Aftercare FAQs guide you through when to lay turf, how to prepare the ground, whether topsoil is needed, and how to care for your lawn afterwards—so you get the best possible results from the start.
Answer.
Spring and autumn are ideal, offering mild temperatures.
Turf can be laid year-round, but summer installations need extra watering and immediate laying.
Answer.
If your soil is poor or uneven, adding quality topsoil helps turf establish properly.
We supply turfing topsoil which can be added to your order.
Answer.
No, we don’t recommend this.
Old grass and weeds will interfere with the new turf’s ability to root properly.
Always prepare fresh soil.
Answer.
Turf should be laid the same day.
In cooler weather, within 24 hours is fine.
In warm weather, aim for 6 hours or sooner.
Answer.
With proper care, turf typically takes around 2 weeks to root. You’ll know it’s ready when you can’t lift the corners.
Once the corners can no longer be lifted, you should then be able to walk on the turf and mow it.
Answer.
Water daily until the turf has rooted.
During warmer months, water in the early morning and evening to prevent drying out.
Answer.
Wait until the turf has rooted, then mow with the blade on its highest setting. Gradually reduce height over future cuts.
Rotary lawn mowers are better than cylinder mowers for encouraging lawn growth.
Answer.
Not immediately. Our turf is pre-fertilised and if laid on quality soil, no feed is needed straight after laying.
Answer.
We don’t offer installation or referrals.
However, laying turf is straightforward with the right preparation—level soil, free of debris, and watered well.
